Fixing Factory Wood Green is the renovation of an existing space within the Rising Green hub to create a new community repair workshop for Fixing Factory, an initiative that helps people save money, learn new skills and cut waste by repairing electronics instead of throwing them away. The brief was to turn an underused interior into a welcoming, hard-working space for repair sessions, training workshops and volunteers.
The design works with the existing building rather than against it. The concrete coffered ceiling is left exposed and painted white, with a grid of linear LED lighting threaded through its bays to give even, shadow-free light across the work surfaces. The plan is arranged as two connected workshops, divided by a bold orange wall carrying the Fixing Factory identity, with a generous opening that keeps the rooms visually linked while letting each run its own session.
Colour does much of the work. Orange walls, yellow steel-framed workbenches and purple floor zones beneath each bench pick up the charity’s branding and mark out where activity happens against a durable grey safety floor. Perimeter benches with integrated power provide space for individual repairs, while open steel shelving, a dedicated PPE station and fume extraction support the practical side of the workshop. A bright yellow kitchenette with built-in storage gives volunteers and visitors a place to gather.
The result is an energetic, practical space that makes repair visible and inviting: a workshop built to be used, shared and learned in
