This contemporary ground-floor brick extension is situated within a Wimbledon Conservation Area and addresses a sloped site with a slanted, cantilevered overhang that complements the character of the existing Edwardian house. Pale yellow stock bricks and warm red bricks were selected to echo the colours and detailing of the original building, ensuring a seamless connection between old and new.
The internal layout has been reconfigured to place the kitchen at the heart of the home, drawing light deeper into the property. An existing conservatory and utility room were demolished at the rear, with the utility room relocated to a more central, convenient position. This reorganisation opens the rear of the house to more light and views of the garden.
To strengthen the connection to the outdoors, the new extension floor was lowered, bringing the interior closer to the garden and allowing for exceptionally high ceilings that add a sense of grandeur to the space.
The pairing traditional style with a limited material palette and stripped-back detailing, creates a fresh, enduring design that respects the home’s heritage while offering a modern living experience.
