Red Copse transforms an early 20th-century detached house in Boar’s Hill into a spacious, contemporary family home, doubling its floor area with the addition of two new wings and a loft extension. The extensions carefully balance old and new, responding to both the character of the original house and the sensitivities of its Green Belt setting.
The new wings are composed of two distinct volumes, each reflecting its function. A two-storey, pitched-roof structure sits alongside the existing house, mirroring its form and materiality, while a bold, cantilevered box extends into the landscape, housing an indoor pool and gym. This contrast breaks up the overall massing, giving each space a clear identity while ensuring the expansion remains sympathetic to its surroundings.
Internally, the design prioritises light, openness, and connections to the landscape, creating a home that feels both expansive and grounded.
