Portico House comprises the extension and refurbishment of a Victorian semi-detached house in Putney, thoughtfully balancing period character with contemporary design. The external materials respect the property's heritage while introducing a modern interpretation that elevates the architectural language.
The distinctive brickwork pattern takes direct inspiration from the existing front portico, with varied brick bonds representing different elements of classical column design—base, shaft, and capital—creating a sculptural façade that honors the building's Victorian roots.
Internally, exposed timber beams and structural steelwork add visual texture and enhance ceiling heights. These elements define distinct zones within the open-plan layout while maintaining spatial flow. Shelving has been ingeniously integrated into the exposed steel beams, combining functionality with architectural expression.
Sustainability sits at the heart of the material palette, with an abundance of natural timber featured throughout, creating warm, tactile spaces that complement the home's Victorian character while establishing its place in contemporary living
