This gable-end pitched roof extension to an attractive Victorian terrace house draws inspiration from the traditional rooflines of both the terrace and the wider local area. The gable end enhances the internal ceiling height at the heart of the house, bringing light deeper into the space, while the low eaves respect the privacy of the neighbouring properties.
Brick detailing echoes the techniques used on the street-facing side of the terrace. Horizontal brick banding, a feature typical of Victorian design and often used to suggest the geology of the earth’s crust, is applied here to express the shift in internal floor levels, adding a layer of texture and continuity to the exterior.
By beautifying the rear elevation, the design responds to contemporary living, where the kitchen and garden are central to family life and social activity.
