CAMBRIDGE MATHS SCHOOL
The existing building was a collection of structures that, over the years, had been amalgamated and expanded to become a school. This ad hoc arrangement required thoughtful re-purposing of spaces and careful consideration of navigation and fire separation around the building. The main challenge was to integrate the necessary equipment to allow two science labs to function within the existing structure. The design team devised clever ways to minimize disruption to the existing building fabric, enabling the installation of new gas, water, and extraction systems at each student station.
A significant aspect of our work involved enhancing navigation throughout the school. We added and designed new wayfinding elements that greatly improve how students and staff move through the building. These improvements are complemented by a color scheme that reflects the school's distinctive branding, creating a cohesive and visually appealing environment.
In addition to internal changes, we re-planned the courtyard to facilitate secure bicycle access, addressing the needs of students who predominantly arrive by bike. This redesign not only improved the functionality of the space but also contributed to the overall safety and convenience for the school community.
The project was funded by the Department of Education and had to be developed according to their requirements and principles, as well as those of the end users. This collaboration ensured that the design met all regulatory standards while also aligning with the practical needs and preferences of the school’s staff and students.
Our holistic approach to this project balanced the integration of modern facilities with the preservation of the building's historical elements, ensuring a functional, safe, and aesthetically pleasing learning environment. The successful completion of this project stands as a testament to our ability to handle complex educational renovations that require both innovative design solutions and meticulous planning.
