A gable end pitched roof extension to an attractive Victorian terrace house. The gable end will reference the Victorian roofs of the terrace and local area and give a good internal ceiling height at the middle of the plot, bringing light deeper into the house and have low eaves heights to the neighbours.

The design intent is to elevate the rear elevation to the same status as the front facade. The use of brick detailing is proposed to reference the same techniques used on the street elevation. the horizontal brick banding used by the Victorians to suggest the geology of the earth’s crust are employed here to express the change in internal floor levels on the external facade. This shift in emphasis towards beautifying the rear elevation is relevant to contemporary living, where the garden and kitchen are the heart of family social activity.
