BAYSWATER

The client of this duplex apartment in Bayswater, London, asked us to create a modern design that would better suit their busy lifestyles and enhance their home’s historic features. The original Victorian terrace had been insensitively split into flats in the mid-20th century and was in poor condition, with two bedrooms, an impractical bathroom and a tiny kitchen on the turn of the stairs. ABHR_A added a modest extension at lower ground level – on top of which sits a pretty balcony –  and reconfigured the entire floorplan. The extension allowed for a generous master suite, with access to a courtyard garden, while removing the second bedroom entirely provided space for a bigger kitchen. This was relocated opposite the living room. The entrance hall was awkwardly small, but not wanting to encroach on the kitchen to enlarge it, ABHR_A instead separated the spaces using a bespoke sliding pocket door, creating a seamless flow. In the staircase nook, where the kitchen used to be, a WC and study desk was added. As for finishes, the homeowners chose neutral hues and classic materials to complement the home’s Victorian origin.
