Heritage and Conservation

We work on Grade II and Grade II* listed buildings across residential and public projects, repairing and adapting historic fabric while designing new work that sits comfortably alongside it.

Good conservation is the art of doing less.

Approach

​

Every historic building carries the reasons it was listed: a plan form, a set of materials, a relationship to its street or setting. Before any design work begins, we take the time to understand what gives a building its significance, so that new interventions grow out of that understanding rather than working against it.

 

Where original fabric survives, we repair it using appropriate traditional methods and materials. Where new work is needed, we design it as a legible, contemporary addition, clear about what is old and what is new, rather than an imitation of either.

Our Experience

Conservation work is led by Alex Bilton, who is listed on the Conservation Register. Our experience spans Grade II and Grade II* listed buildings, in both residential and public settings, with particular knowledge of specialist and traditional materials.
